IELS Malta is an English language school in Sliema, on the coastal strip that holds most of Malta’s student life. Sliema is walkable, served by buses to the rest of the island, and close enough to the seafront that a lesson and a swim fit into the same afternoon.
Two courses are bookable here. General English runs at 15 lessons a week and suits students who want their mornings in class and their afternoons free. Intensive English adds to that load for students working to a deadline, an exam or a job application. Both can be booked from a single week up to 52 weeks, so the same school works for a summer stay and for an academic year.
Classes hold 12 to 20 students and the minimum age is 16. Students come from across Europe, the Gulf and Latin America, which matters more than it sounds: a class where no two people share a first language is a class where English is the only way to be understood.
Accommodation is offered as homestay with half board — a room with a Maltese host family, breakfast and an evening meal included. It is the cheaper option and the one that puts you in English outside class as well as in it.
Malta is worth weighing on its own terms. English is an official language, so signs, banks and bus drivers all work in it, and the cost of living runs below the UK or Ireland. The trade-off is that Sliema is busiest, and priciest, between June and August. Term-time months are quieter and usually cheaper — the price table below shows what each week actually costs across the year.
